Unfortunately, there are some families in The Gambia residing in conditions that are below minimal socially acceptable living conditions. With a lack of funds to make much-needed changes, it can be impossible for families to find a solution to the difficulties they encounter making a safe environment for the family to live in.
This doesn't mean having luxuries such as televisions and fridges - this is the bare basics of human need - a roof that doesn't leak - beds for the children, netting on windows and beds to reduce the risk of malaria. Working with the Village Development Committee and our ground team we identify families living in 'at risk' conditions and work to help the family improve their home. We employ local builders and together work to make a difference to the way the family live.
To date, we have supported over twelve compound makeovers in Gunjur and Brikama.
