Gunjur Project Association Summer School is an annual four weeks study program for all categories of students, ages ranging from five years (nursery age) to seniors (grade 12). This study session is for all students regardless of which school they attend.
The main aims and objectives of these sessions are to engage students at the school on academic activities to better prepare them for the coming academic year giving them opportunities to develop their abilities and skills. There are always some trained Gambian teachers who take the responsibility to manage and direct the program according to the Gambian school curriculum.
Alongside are senior members of students called Kajabang-six who do volunteer to work with the teachers to run certain functions of the session and there are European volunteers too who do invest wholly heartedly making the session a reality.
In 2017 we piloted a summer teacher training project that upskilled local teachers and this is something we wish to continue. The summer school has a timetable that includes focused English and maths lessons as well as challenges based collaborative learning tasks and time to experience and reflect on the benefits of different approaches. The 2018 programme will run in July and August and will provide valuable training for 30 local teachers.
